Development of Finland's Kalashnikov-derived rifle
RK 62 adapted the Kalashnikov concept into a high-quality Finnish service rifle.
The RK 62, officially 7.62 RK 62, was developed in Finland as a domestic assault rifle derived from the Kalashnikov system but manufactured to Finnish standards and requirements. Valmet and Sako production gave Finland a reliable 7.62 x 39 mm service rifle suited to national defence and harsh climate conditions. The rifle retained the basic strengths of the AK operating concept while adding Finnish sights, construction quality, and local ergonomics. It became one of the defining weapons of the Finnish Defence Forces.
