Finnish AK-derived service rifle

medium

The RK 62 was developed by Valmet and Sako as Finland's 7.62x39 mm assault rifle and became the basis for later Finnish and foreign designs.

The RK 62 emerged from Finnish studies of assault rifles during the 1950s, with the Soviet AK pattern providing the most important starting point. Valmet and Sako adapted the concept for Finnish manufacturing standards, sights, ergonomics, and durability requirements. The rifle became Finland's standard service weapon and influenced the Israeli Galil through Valmet machinery and design features.

Milled-receiver 7.62x39 mm assault rifle

medium

RK 62 uses a Kalashnikov-type long-stroke gas system, 7.62x39 mm cartridge, distinctive sights, and Finnish flash suppressor/bayonet features.

Technically, the RK 62 is an AK-derived rifle built to a high manufacturing standard. It uses the 7.62x39 mm cartridge, long-stroke gas piston operation, robust magazines, and Finnish sight and muzzle-device arrangements. A distinctive three-prong flash suppressor also functions with a bayonet/wire-cutting concept. Later RK 62M upgrades added rails, modern stocks, and improved accessories while retaining the base rifle.

Core Finnish Defence Forces rifle

medium

The RK 62 has armed Finnish conscripts, reservists, and active units for decades, with modernization keeping it relevant.

Operationally, the RK 62 is one of the central weapons of Finnish defense. It has equipped conscript and reserve formations in a national-defense model where reliability in cold and forested terrain matters. Modernized RK 62 variants extend the rifle's service life by adding optical sights and accessory support, showing the endurance of the original Finnish AK-derived design.
