Research Notes

Polish 5.45 mm Kalashnikov-derived rifle

The kbk wz. 1988 Tantal was Poland's late Cold War 5.45x39 mm assault rifle, developed by Fabryka Broni Radom as the Polish Army moved from 7.62 mm Kalashnikov-pattern rifles toward the Soviet small-caliber standard. It adapted AK-74-type concepts with Polish-specific features.

Burst fire and Polish service adaptations

Tantal retained the rugged Kalashnikov operating pattern while adding a three-round burst option, distinctive muzzle device, folding stock, and compatibility with Polish accessories. It was intended to modernize infantry firepower while preserving familiar maintenance and handling for soldiers already trained on AK-family rifles.

Short-lived transition before NATO standardization

The Tantal's service life was shaped by timing. It entered service as the Warsaw Pact ended and Poland moved toward NATO, making 5.56 mm weapons more attractive for future standardization. The rifle is therefore important as a transitional design between Soviet-aligned small arms and later Polish NATO-compatible rifles.
