Kbs wz. 1996 Beryl is Poland's 5.56 mm assault rifle developed from the Kalashnikov lineage.
The Kbs wz. 1996 Beryl is a Polish assault rifle produced by Fabryka Broni Lucznik-Radom. The manufacturer presents Beryl as a 5.56 mm rifle family, and Military Factory traces it as a Polish development influenced by Kalashnikov-pattern weapons. It became a standard Polish service rifle in the post-Warsaw Pact era.
Beryl modernized Polish small arms around 5.56 mm ammunition while retaining robust AK-derived operating principles.
The rifle's significance is not that it reinvented infantry weapons, but that it gave Poland a domestically produced NATO-caliber rifle using familiar manufacturing and operating concepts. Accessories, rails, optics compatibility, folding-stock variants, and carbine versions allowed the family to evolve with soldier-system needs. Its design balances ruggedness with alliance ammunition standardization.
Beryl matters as a marker of Poland's shift from Soviet-standard weapons to NATO-compatible infantry equipment.
For military capability, service rifles matter because they are carried in large numbers and shape training, logistics, and infantry modernization. Beryl's value was domestic control, familiarity, and NATO ammunition compatibility. Its limitations are those of many AK-derived designs: ergonomics and modularity have needed upgrades to match newer Western rifle systems.
