Research Notes

Variable-geometry successor to the MiG-21

medium

The MiG-23 introduced variable-sweep wings and more capable radar and missile options to Soviet tactical aviation.

The Mikoyan MiG-23 Flogger was developed to move Soviet fighter capability beyond the lightweight MiG-21. Its variable-geometry wing allowed better takeoff, landing, and high-speed performance tradeoffs, while its radar and missile fit gave later variants a stronger beyond-visual-range role. The aircraft became a major Soviet and Warsaw Pact fighter and was exported widely, producing many national subvariants and combat records.

Swing-wing fighter with interceptor and fighter-bomber variants

medium

The MiG-23 combined variable-sweep wings, a powerful engine, radar-guided missiles, and later ground-attack derivatives.

Technically, the MiG-23's defining feature is its variable-sweep wing, which could be adjusted for takeoff, maneuvering, cruise, or high-speed intercept. The aircraft used a powerful single engine, side intakes, and radar in the nose, enabling missile engagements that earlier MiG-21 variants could not handle as effectively. The Flogger family evolved through fighter, interceptor, training, and strike derivatives, with the MiG-27 later becoming a dedicated ground-attack branch.

Widely exported Cold War fighter with uneven combat results

medium

The Flogger served across Soviet, Warsaw Pact, Middle Eastern, African, and Asian air forces, but performance varied heavily by variant and user.

Operationally, the MiG-23 appeared in many conflicts because it was exported so widely. It served in Warsaw Pact air forces, Middle Eastern wars, African conflicts, and South Asian inventories. Combat results were mixed, reflecting differences between early and late variants, pilot training, maintenance, weapons, and opposing air forces. Its importance is still substantial: for many states, the MiG-23 was the first fighter with a meaningful radar-missile capability and higher-speed tactical flexibility than earlier Soviet designs.
