Improved F-5E/F fighter family
mediumF-5 Tiger II is the improved F-5E/F generation, widely exported and used for light fighter, training, and adversary roles.
The F-5 Tiger II represents the improved F-5E/F generation rather than the earlier F-5A/B Freedom Fighter. It kept the family traits of simplicity, small size, and affordability while adding more powerful engines, improved avionics, and better air-combat capability. Open-source histories describe the broader F-5 family as a Northrop lightweight fighter line, while the USAF museum's F-5 material explains the type's value for intercept and ground-support missions. Tiger II became one of the most widely recognized light fighters of the Cold War era.
