Predator B Becomes Reaper

The MQ-9/RQ-9 Predator B was developed as a larger, more powerful successor to the MQ-1 Predator.

The aircraft known as Predator B was developed by General Atomics as a larger remotely piloted aircraft with more engine power, payload, altitude, and endurance than the MQ-1. The U.S. Air Force designated the armed version MQ-9 Reaper, reflecting its role beyond surveillance. It answered demand for persistent ISR combined with precision strike capacity.

Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance RPA

The Reaper combines long endurance, sensor carriage, satellite control, and multiple weapon stations.

The MQ-9 uses a turboprop engine, long wings, remote ground-control stations, satellite communications, and sensor payloads suited to wide-area surveillance. Compared with MQ-1, it can carry more stores and operate with a broader mission set. Its design made it a workhorse for armed overwatch, ISR, maritime patrol adaptations, and allied remotely piloted operations.

Standard U.S. Armed RPA

The Reaper replaced the Predator in many roles and became a major allied drone platform.

MQ-9s have served with the U.S. Air Force, U.S. special operations forces, and allied operators. They provide persistence, sensor coverage, and strike options without putting an onboard crew at risk. The aircraft also shows the limits of older permissive-environment RPAs, since contested airspace pushes operators toward standoff, stealth, or collaborative systems.
