Overview
CR-21
The Vektor CR-21 is a South African 5.56×45mm NATO bullpup assault rifle designed as a potential successor to the Vektor R4, featuring a compact design, low weight of 3.72 kg, and compatibility with various sight options and underbarrel grenade launchers. Introduced in 1997, only 200 units were produced, primarily for specialized military units, with a mechanism derived from the Kalashnikov action and a non-reversible ejection port limiting use to right-handed operators.

Research Notes

Prototype promise without broad procurement

Despite its modern appearance, the CR-21 did not replace the R4 family across South African service. It remains a useful case study in how a technically credible domestic rifle can fail to move beyond limited production when procurement budgets, existing inventories, and user conservatism intervene.
