South African Galil-Derived Rifle

The R4 adapted the Israeli Galil pattern for South African service needs.

The Vektor R4 was developed in South Africa as a licensed and locally adapted derivative of the Israeli Galil rifle. It replaced older 7.62 mm rifles with a 5.56 mm service weapon better suited to modern infantry loads and automatic fire. South African production and adaptation made the R4 a national standard rather than a simple import.

Rugged 5.56 mm Infantry Rifle

The R4 uses a long-stroke gas system and robust construction derived from the AK/Galil lineage.

The rifle's design lineage combines Kalashnikov-style operating principles with Galil refinements and South African ergonomic changes. It is chambered for 5.56x45 mm ammunition and built for rough operational environments. Variants such as the R5 and R6 shortened the weapon for airborne, vehicle, or specialist use.

SANDF Standard Rifle Family

The R4 family became closely associated with South African infantry and security forces.

The R4 served with the South African Defence Force and later the South African National Defence Force, as well as police and regional users. Its long service life reflects local support, ruggedness, and suitability to southern African field conditions. Modernization efforts have focused on optics, rails, and accessories rather than replacing the core rifle concept immediately.
