198 out of 216 drones shot down by Ukraine — Russian "Gerans" lose pressure economy

198 shot down or suppressed devices out of 216 — this is not just a good nightly report from Ukrainian air defense. It is an indicator that Russia's bet on cheap mass aerial pressure has entered a phase of diminishing returns. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, on the night of June 5, Russia deployed two guided air-to-surface missiles X-59/69 and 216 drones of various types — "Shahed," "Gerbera," "Italmas," "Banderole," and imitators "Parody"; 198 UAVs were destroyed or suppressed, with hits from 16 devices recorded in 13 locations. For a military analyst, the important aspect here is not the arithmetic joy of Kyiv, but the change in the ratio of costs, pace, and results.

Why this night is more important than a regular report

The Russian "Geran" campaign since 2022 has been built on a simple logic: a cheap device forces the opponent to either spend an expensive air defense missile or accept damage to energy, warehouses, industry, and cities. In Soviet textbooks, this would be called not a breakthrough of defense, but the exhaustion of its material component. But such a scheme only works as long as the attacker maintains a favorable exchange. If the Ukrainian side increasingly responds not with a Patriot or NASAMS missile, but with its own interceptor costing a few thousand euros, then the Russian "cheap" strike ceases to be cheap in an operational sense.

It is useful to separate two levels here. At the upper echelon, Ukraine still experiences a shortage of means against ballistic and hypersonic targets. An analysis by Defence Ukraine regarding the strike on June 1-2 indicated that only 11 out of 41 ballistic and hypersonic targets were intercepted, while the lower echelon against 656 drones yielded a result above 90%. This is an unpleasant but very accurate picture: the weakness lies not in the fight against "Gerans," but in the shortage of the anti-missile layer. That is why Moscow continues to combine drones, cruise missiles, "Iskanders," and sometimes demonstration systems like "Oreshnik."

The Ukrainian response has become industrial, not artisanal

The most important change in recent months is the institutionalization of interceptors. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense codified the JEDI Shahed Hunter in March as a vertically launched multi-rotor interceptor: weighing just over 4 kg, with a payload of up to 500 g, a speed exceeding 350 km/h, an altitude of up to 6 km, and a coverage area of up to 40 km. According to the ministry, the system automatically receives data from radars, can capture, track, and guide itself to the target using daytime and thermal imaging cameras. This is no longer a volunteer improvisation with a good camera and a brave pilot, but an element of the air defense layer.

The experience of the units confirms the same trend. Ukrainska Pravda, in an article about interceptors, described the work of Sting and the Darknode unit: "Shaheds" fly lower and lower, sometimes around 100 meters, use guided modifications, rear cameras, and maneuvers when detecting an interceptor. In January, the company Nemesis alone reported 276 downed Shaheds. Even if one approaches such numbers with the usual military caution, the structure of the problem is clear: Russia adapts the device, Ukraine adapts the interception layer, then Russia changes the flight profile again. This is no longer "drone against city," but an evolutionary duel of design bureaus, frontline operators, and manufacturers.

Dancer 4.5.0 shows the next stage of the race

The news on June 6 about Dancer 4.5.0 from Yartura is particularly indicative. According to Defence Blog, this is a fixed-wing interceptor with a speed of up to 450 km/h, a range of up to 30 km, an altitude of up to 4.8 km, a weight of 6.8 kg, and a warhead of 1 kg. Its main feature is the automatic target tracking system ATTS, allowing it to re-engage the target if the first pass does not result in a hit. To the uninitiated, this sounds like a nice marketing detail. For a military engineer, it acknowledges the main problem of UAV air combat: the engagement window is small, guidance errors are inevitable, and manual re-acquisition of the target in real-time is too slow.

Why is the speed of 450 km/h not accidental? Ukrainian sources and Ministry of Defense advisor Sergey "Flash" Beskrestnov indicated that Russia is developing reactive "Gerans" — Geran-3, Geran-4, and Geran-5. For Geran-4, speeds of about 300-500 km/h and a range of up to 800 km were mentioned, while for Geran-5 — already 500-700 km/h in the future. Even if these estimates are exaggerated or describe experimental samples, the direction is clear: Moscow is trying to escape the trap of the slow Shahed-136, which has become too convenient a target for Ukrainian interceptors. Dancer is a response specifically to this, not just a new toy from a private firm.

What this means for the Russian doctrine of pressure

The Russian side will not abandon "Gerans." That would be an incorrect conclusion. Even with a 90 percent neutralization level, the remaining 10% can kill people, ignite warehouses, damage substations, and force Ukraine to keep its units in constant tension. Moreover, imitators like "Parody" and cheap "Gerberas" do not have to hit the target: their task is to overload radars, communication channels, operators, and mobile groups. In this sense, the Russian logic remains intact.

But its cost is changing. If earlier Moscow bought the overload of Ukrainian air defense through mass, now it has to pay for speed, communication, cameras, maneuverability, jet engines, and more complex electronics. This raises the cost of "cheap" weapons and creates a new dependency on components that are harder to procure under sanctions. The old Russian formula "mass compensates for quality" works worse when the opponent turns the quality of interception into a mass industrial practice.

Limits of Ukrainian success

Kyiv also does not have a magical solution. Interceptors require a dense network of sensors, radar coverage, trained crews, batteries, communication channels, and constant production. Pravda rightly noted the problems of radar zone coverage at the front, limited flight duration, and the need to place units near Shahed routes. Furthermore, no Sting, JEDI, or Dancer can replace Patriot against "Iskander" in the terminal phase. Success at the lower echelon may even push Moscow to mix waves with ballistic means more often, where Ukrainian defense still depends on Western supplies.

And yet, the night of June 5 shows an important thing. Russia is still capable of delivering painful strikes, but its mass drone campaign no longer looks like a one-sided exhaustion machine. Ukraine is not just shooting down devices; it is restructuring the economy of battle so that the Russian mass strike requires increasingly expensive upgrades. In the coming months, Moscow will likely increase the share of reactive "Gerans," guided variants, and imitators. Kyiv will respond with speed, automatic tracking, and distributed sensor networks. The side that wins will not be the one with a single successful UAV model, but the one with a faster cycle from frontline error to serial correction.
