Australia to Sell Advanced Radar Technology to Canada

This agreement represents Australia's first overseas sale of radar technology known as over-the-horizon radar, which will support Canada's surveillance of the Arctic region.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated in a press release: "Today's agreement marks a milestone in Australia's defense trade and lays the foundation for deeper and mutually beneficial defense industrial cooperation with Canada."

Approximately 40% of Canada's land area is located in the Arctic, but this region is sparsely populated and lacks infrastructure. A significant portion of Russia's Arctic region—about one-fifth of its total land area—faces across the sea from Canada and the U.S. state of Alaska.

Canada's Secretary of State for Defence Procurement, Stephen Fuhr, stated: "Canada is enhancing security in the Arctic through the Arctic over-the-horizon radar project. This project is part of a broader effort aimed at establishing an integrated Arctic monitoring and communication network, which will enhance Canada's ability to monitor, assess, and respond to activities in the Arctic region."

Australia's "Jindalee" operational radar network can detect and track aircraft, ships, and missiles up to 3,000 kilometers away.
