Poland intercepts Russian spy plane over Baltic Sea again
Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea on Monday, roughly 30 kilometers (19 miles) north of Łeba on Poland’s coast, Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said.
“Russia has once again tested our deterrence and air defense systems,” Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote. “Before noon, 30 km north of Łeba, our fighters intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft. There was no violation of our airspace over the Baltic.”
The aircraft did not violate Polish airspace, according to the minister. Monday’s intercept was at least the third publicly reported Il-20 intercept by Polish fighters over the Baltic Sea this year, following similar incidents in March, May and July.
The Il-20, known by NATO as the “Coot-A,” is a Soviet-designed signals and electronic reconnaissance aircraft derived from the Il-18 airliner. Russia regularly flies the aircraft over the Baltic Sea to collect electronic and communications intelligence, and the flights have become a recurring trigger for NATO quick reaction alert sorties in the region.
In several previous intercepts this year, Polish officials said the Il-20 was operating without a filed flight plan and with its transponder switched off. In March, Poland’s Operational Command of the Armed Forces said one such intercept marked the aircraft’s ninth reconnaissance mission of the year in the region, describing the pattern as a sustained Russian intelligence-gathering effort rather than an isolated event.
Poland has used both MiG-29 and F-16 fighters to carry out Il-20 intercepts over the Baltic this year. The MiG-29, a Soviet-designed aircraft, remains in a shrinking quick reaction alert role as Poland phases in newer F-16 and FA-50 fighters, with some retired Polish MiG-29s transferred to Ukraine.
Kosiniak-Kamysz has previously described the Il-20 flights as deliberate provocations intended to test Polish and NATO air defense response times, radar coverage and command-and-control coordination along the alliance’s eastern flank.
