Ground-based air defence has moved to the top of Europe’s security agenda. From the Baltic to the Balkans, NATO nations are investing in layered air defence architectures, accelerating procurement of systems such as IRIS-T SLM and Patriot, and committing to the European Sky Shield Initiative, now with 21 participating states. Behind every intercept, every radar sweep, every command decision lies aprosaic but decisive requirement: reliable, uninterrupted electrical power. This is where VINCORION’s energy systems come in.
Headquartered in Wedel near Hamburg, the technology company has supplied energy systems for ground-based air defence platforms for decades. From its plant in Altenstadt, VINCORION has delivered more than 1,500 gensets to the global Patriot user base until today. Its solutions keep weapon systems operational—consistently and under the most demanding conditions.
The Energy Challenge in Modern GBAD
Air defence imposes unique power demands. Systems such as Patriot and IRIS-T SLM need to be up and running 24/7/365. Radars, fire control computers, communications links and launcher electronics must remain continuously powered—from minus 32 to plus 55 degrees Celsius, in remote forward positions with limited logistics and under persistent threat to supply lines. Equally critical, GBAD must absorb sharp load spikes within seconds to secure an engagement. When a threat is detected and the firing sequence initiates, power demand surges instantly. Systems that cannot deliver peak loads on cue put the entire defensive chain at risk.
Overall, the consequences of power failure are operationally catastrophic. Fuel convoys are high-priority targets. Every litre saved, every extended maintenance interval, every generator that keeps running when others don’t—hese are force multipliers.
Operational performance increase through hybrid technology
VINCORION’s answer to these demands is the introduction of military hybrid energy systems, designed to the tactical needs of modern GBAD systems. Based on the latest product family of tactical energy systems with the PGM low emission gensets and the ESM hybrid battery storage, VINCORION provides proven hybrid technologies for the demanding requirements in air defense.
The performance figures of this new generation of hybrid systems speak for themselves: compared with the standard Patriot launcher generator, the Patriot Hybrid Generator reduces fuel consumption over a 24-hour period by 48 per cent. Operating hours between scheduled downtimes increases from 750 to 3,000 hours, a fourfold improvement. At battalion level, daily refuelling operations fall from 72 to 24. Fewer fuel convoys mean fewer targets, fewer casualties and greater operational freedom. Besides an increase in uptime and reliability, the need for support personnel to operate, refuel and maintain the energy systems is lowered by more than 60 per cent. This is also enabled through a highly automated and unified control interface that keeps operator workload to a minimum, regardless of system complexity.
A Proven Partner Across GBAD Platforms
VINCORION supplies energy systems for both Patriot and IRIS-T SLM two of Europe’s most consequential air defence platforms. Its manufacturing facility in Altenstadt, Bavaria, situated on the site of a former military airfield, has long served as the company’s centre of competence for mobile power generation. Output has scaled rapidly in response to accelerating demand – with headroom to ramp further as orders require.
Scaling to meet Europe’s demand
As Europe expands and renews its ground-based air defence, the energy systems that sustain it matter more than ever. VINCORION’s battle proven components—field tested and refined over generations of deployment—position us to meet nations’ rising needs at pace and at scale. Reliable power is no longer background infrastructure. It is a strategic capability.
