Rheinmetall delivers first Lynx XM30 prototype to U.S. Army

American Rheinmetall delivered the first of eight Lynx XM30 prototypes to the U.S. Army, the company said, entering the vehicle into government-led developmental and performance testing under the XM30 program’s Phase 3/4 Engineering and Manufacturing Development contract, valued at approximately $764 million.

The delivery comes days after General Dynamics Land Systems delivered its own XM30 Wolf prototype to the Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, last Friday, putting both companies competing to replace the M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle on a similar testing timeline.

“Delivering our first prototype to the Army is an important step as the XM30 Combat Vehicle program enters a more visible phase,” said Matthew Warnick, CEO of American Rheinmetall. “Team Lynx now has the opportunity to show the Army that we can deliver on the promise of a modern replacement for the Bradley.”

American Rheinmetall said it will deliver the remaining seven prototypes later this year for use in operational unit training. That rollout runs parallel to the technical evaluations already underway, part of the Army’s Transformation in Contact 2.0 initiative, which is intended to rapidly prototype, test and field new technology directly to deployed and training units. Once the vehicles clear initial military safety checks, soldiers will move into active field maneuvers, a training phase the company said culminates in large-scale combat simulations.

“Executing a parallel evaluation timeline requires a level of industrial agility that Team Lynx was built for,” Warnick said. “We are proving that the U.S. Defense Industrial Base can move at the speed of operational relevance, stripping years off traditional development timelines to get the right capability to the Warfighter.”

Production of the Lynx prototypes runs across multiple states. Turret fabrication takes place in Plymouth, Michigan, before subsystems move to Slidell, Louisiana, for hull and chassis integration. Completed vehicles undergo automotive shakeout trials to confirm mechanical readiness, then return to Louisiana for final paint and detailing. The process ends with a joint inspection alongside the Defense Contract Management Agency before the government formally accepts each vehicle.

The Army is expected to select a winning XM30 design in 2027. Additional General Dynamics XM30 Wolf prototypes are separately planned for delivery to Fort Hood, Texas, ahead of testing that could lead to a full-rate production decision for that design.
