Russia claims successful test launch of the "Sarmat" missile

According to reporters from the Central Station, on May 12 local time, Russian President Putin listened via video conference to a report on the successful test launch of the "Sarmat" missile system. Putin stated that the "Sarmat" missile has a range of up to 35,000 kilometers.

The commander of the Russian Strategic Rocket Forces indicated that the successful launch of the "Sarmat" missile will enable the first "Sarmat" missile regiment to enter combat readiness by the end of this year.

On April 20, 2022, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that Russia successfully test-fired a "Sarmat" intercontinental ballistic missile that day. The Russian side claims that its fifth-generation heavy intercontinental ballistic missile "Sarmat" weighs over 200 tons and can carry various nuclear warheads, including hypersonic warheads, capable of overcoming enemy missile defense systems. It will replace the Soviet-era "Satan" intercontinental ballistic missile. In his 2018 State of the Nation address, Putin introduced that one of the "trump cards" of the "Sarmat" intercontinental ballistic missile is its ability to attack enemy targets in another hemisphere by flying over the poles, a mode of attack that existing and developing missile defense systems in other countries cannot counter; it "can reach any corner of the Earth."
