The ongoing conflict between the US and Iran: Germany plans to withdraw two warships from the Red Sea.
Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, July 24 - The German Ministry of Defense stated on the 23rd that, given the ongoing conflict in Iran, it currently does not have the conditions to deploy troops to maintain the shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz. Germany plans to relocate two warships from the Gulf of Aden to the eastern Mediterranean in the coming days.
According to a report by Deutsche Presse-Agentur citing a spokesperson from the German Ministry of Defense, the German Navy's mine countermeasures vessel "Furda" and the supply ship "Moselle" were dispatched to the Gulf of Aden in June and are docked at the port of Djibouti. The two warships are on standby to carry out mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
The German Ministry of Defense stated on the 23rd that considering the regional situation remains unstable in the short term, it does not have the conditions to carry out operations related to the Strait of Hormuz, and therefore has decided to relocate the two warships from the area near the Red Sea. Subsequently, the two warships will be on standby in the Mediterranean.
German Defense Minister Pistorius stated in early July that, given the long-term uncertainty of the situation, it cannot be ruled out that the two warships may be withdrawn back to Germany in the coming months.
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman and is a vital passage for global oil and gas transportation. Since the U.S. and Israel launched military strikes against Iran at the end of February, the Strait of Hormuz has essentially been in a state of blockade. Since July, tensions between the U.S. and Iran have continued to escalate.
