On May 13, photographer Jonathan Tweedy captured several U.S. Navy test aircraft taking off from Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. Among them was an F/A-18F Super Hornet from the Navy's Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 31, which had an AIM-260 missile mounted on the external pylon of its right engine air intake.

The images taken by Tweedy confirm that, at least from the outside, this missile has a very minimalist design, featuring only four tail fins at the rear. Unlike the AIM-120, it lacks a mid-body control surface and even does not have canard wings on the sides, reflecting an overall layout optimized for maximum speed and range.

From this image, the AIM-260 appears to be equipped with a high-explosive warhead, as indicated by the yellow stripe at the front of the missile body. There are also two black stripes at the rear of the missile body, which may indicate the position of the missile's rocket engine.

Compared to the white of the missile body, the nose cone of the missile is a distinct light gray. There are square markings in different positions on the rear of the missile body. Such markings are commonly seen on aerial munitions and aircraft during testing, aiding in visual tracking.

This is particularly important for engaging targets beyond the detection range of the launch platform's own sensors, and it can also allow the launching aircraft, especially stealth aircraft, to avoid turning on their own radar, thereby reducing the risk of detection. Multiple networked Joint Advanced Tactical Missiles could even coordinate to execute attack missions.
