Turkish officials inspect RAF base for Typhoon support
Turkish defense specialists inspected aircraft maintenance facilities at Royal Air Force Coningsby in England on Sept. 15-17 as work continues on Türkiye’s purchase of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets from the United Kingdom.
The Turkish Ministry of National Defense announced the visit in a post on X. The delegation included personnel from the ministry, the Turkish Air Force Command’s aircraft maintenance working group and the General Directorate of Military Factories. The ministry called the trip a step toward planning maintenance and sustainment, checking technical infrastructure compatibility and strengthening cooperation with the UK.
The post did not say how many people traveled, which facilities they toured or what they found. It also did not say whether any maintenance work on Turkish Typhoons will be done at Coningsby, in Lincolnshire.
Türkiye ordered 20 Typhoons under a £5.4 billion ($7.2 billion) agreement signed in Ankara in October 2025. The jets will be delivered in three batches: six in 2030, eight in 2031 and six in 2032. Final assembly will take place at BAE Systems’ Warton site in Lancashire. The Defence Blog reported on Aug. 1 that BAE Systems had confirmed production of the aircraft was underway.
Support for the fleet is being arranged separately. In March 2026, BAE Systems won a UK government contract covering training, support equipment and services for Türkiye’s Typhoons. It includes simulators, electronic warfare systems, spare parts and technical assistance for an initial three years after the aircraft enter service. Türkiye and the UK also signed a separate agreement on March 25, 2026, covering technical and logistics support for the fleet.
Under the training package, the Royal Air Force will train 10 Turkish instructor pilots and nearly 100 Turkish maintenance personnel.
