U.S. Media Reports Pentagon is Assessing Reduction of Military Presence in the Gulf Region
On August 19, Xinhua News Agency reported from Washington that, according to some U.S. officials and informed sources cited by the Washington Post on the 18th, the Pentagon is assessing whether to reduce the U.S. military presence in the Middle East due to the impact of the conflict in Iran.
The report stated that U.S. large overseas military bases have suffered damage from months of attacks by Iran, and the Pentagon has a rare opportunity to reconsider its military presence in the region, with one important aspect being whether to withdraw troops from the Gulf region. Previously, the U.S. Department of Defense had indicated that it might not rebuild bases to the scale they were before the conflict.
The report revealed that the U.S. military typically deploys about 40,000 personnel at nearly 20 locations in the Middle East.
The report also quoted an anonymous senior official as saying that this is a "prudent planning" effort, which may ultimately provide a reference for the government to decide whether to rebuild military bases damaged in the conflict.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated in July that the cost of the conflict with Iran has reached $37.5 billion. Additionally, according to estimates from the American Enterprise Institute in April, rebuilding the attacked U.S. military bases may require another $5 billion.
