The USS Theodore Roosevelt departed San Diego on Sunday for what is anticipated to be an extended Middle East deployment, which would make it the fifth U.S. aircraft carrier to have been committed to operations connected to the Iran war since it began seven months ago.
According to an Aug. 26 report by USNI News about the Roosevelt’s deployment, the carrier’s 5,000-strong crew is expected to head to Central Command’s area of responsibility, where the aircraft carrier will relieve the USS George Washington. The Roosevelt is the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 9 and carries the strike group commander and staff.
A Navy official confirmed to Task & Purpose that the USS Theodore Roosevelt is underway. The Roosevelt’s departure was first reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune, and video of it leaving port was posted to social media by the ship tracker WarshipsCam.
The Roosevelt sailors and their families were told before the deployment to prepare for about eight months away, with the possibility of an extension as the Navy continues to contend with extended carrier deployments driven by operations in the Middle East.
The Navy has maintained two carrier strike groups in the Middle East since the Iran war began on Feb. 28. The USS George Washington and USS George H.W. Bush are currently operating in the region, according to USNI News.
With the Roosevelt, five of the Navy’s 11 aircraft carriers have now been committed to operations connected to the conflict over the past seven months: the USS Gerald R. Ford, USS Abraham Lincoln, USS George H.W. Bush, USS George Washington and USS Theodore Roosevelt.
Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle and the Navy’s senior enlisted leader, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy John Perryman, said earlier this month that lessons from the USS Abraham Lincoln’s extended deployment were being incorporated into preparations for the Roosevelt.
“Right now, the USS Theodore Roosevelt is putting those lessons into action, using what we learned from Abraham Lincoln and Gerald R. Ford,” Caudle said earlier this month. “That starts with logistics.”

Caudle said the Roosevelt was maximizing its supply of food, retail products and hygiene items before deploying, while converting available spaces aboard the carrier into additional storage.
The changes follow months of concerns from sailors and families about conditions aboard carriers on extended Middle East deployments, including food shortages, long stretches without port calls and uncertainty over when sailors would return home.
They also come after senior Pentagon and Navy officials publicly attacked reporting about conditions aboard the Lincoln. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called the coverage “completely misrepresented,” while acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao called it “dishonest.”
Navy leaders also said they were changing how the Roosevelt communicates with families during the deployment.
“We are applying lessons learned to family readiness, working with the ship’s ombudsman and family readiness groups to provide families with reliable, consistent communication throughout their deployment,” Caudle said. “That’s what a learning Navy looks like.”
The Lincoln spent more than eight months without a port call during its extended deployment, while sailors and their families raised concerns about food, supplies and communication.

CNN reported last week that eight service members across the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group attempted suicide during the deployment, citing a letter from acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao to Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York. No service members died by suicide.
Since fighting renewed this month, Iran has targeted carriers and other warships around the Strait of Hormuz, with the ships evading missile attacks. This month also saw an uptick in naval casualties, with 29 sailors as well as nine Marines reported as wounded in action by the Pentagon’s casualty database.
