As a mortarman earlier in his career, Faulconer saw firsthand how small changes in wind, temperature, or humidity could affect where rounds landed, especially when operating close to friendly troops. “I can’t overstate how many times systems didn’t work the way they were supposed to,” Faulconer says. “We used to have a simple mindset: if you don’t trust it, you don’t use it.”
