Sigma

SIGMA is a modular warship design family developed by Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding in the Netherlands. The name is associated with Ship Integrated Geometrical Modularity Approach, reflecting a design method that can generate different hull lengths and mission fits. The family was created primarily for export navies needing modern surface combatants sized between patrol vessels, corvettes, and frigates.

Technically, SIGMA is not one fixed ship but a configurable design family. Depending on variant, a SIGMA vessel can carry naval guns, anti-ship missiles, surface-to-air missiles, sonar, combat management systems, and aviation facilities. This modularity lets navies choose a balance between cost, displacement, endurance, and combat capability.

Operationally, SIGMA ships give customer navies a modern surface combatant without designing a bespoke class from scratch. They can perform maritime security, escort, anti-surface warfare, and limited air or ASW missions depending on fit. Their real capability depends heavily on each customer's sensors, weapons, crew training, and maintenance budget.
