Research Notes

Army Air and Missile Defense Branch

S-300V was developed separately from the S-300P to protect Soviet ground forces.

The S-300V branch was created for Soviet ground forces rather than national air-defense troops. It needed to move with operational formations and address aircraft, cruise missiles, and tactical ballistic missiles. That requirement produced a tracked system with different radars, launchers, and missiles from the more familiar S-300P family.

Tracked Antey System

Tracked launchers and specialized radars gave S-300V mobility and anti-ballistic missile roles.

S-300V uses tracked TELARs, command vehicles, surveillance radars, and specialized engagement radars. Different missile types allow the system to handle aerodynamic and ballistic threats. Its tracked chassis and army-level organization made it suitable for forward military districts and mobile formations rather than fixed strategic sites.

High-End Ground Forces SAM

S-300V and Antey-2500 variants served as heavy mobile air-defense assets.

The S-300V family became one of the most capable mobile air-defense systems associated with Russian ground forces. Export variants such as Antey-2500 offered customers a high-end air and missile-defense option. The system's significance lies in bridging battlefield mobility with strategic-range and anti-ballistic missile capability.
