Development for the Rafale fighter

RBE2 is the multirole radar family developed by Thales for Dassault's Rafale.

The RBE2 radar was developed for the Rafale combat aircraft, giving the fighter a compact multirole sensor able to support air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. The later RBE2 AESA version replaced mechanically steered or passive-array concepts with an active electronically scanned array. Thales emphasizes the RBE2 AESA as drawing on decades of combat radar experience and offering major advantages for Rafale operations. The radar is therefore central to the Rafale's identity as a sensor-rich multirole aircraft.

AESA multirole sensing

RBE2 AESA improves detection, tracking, reliability, and simultaneous mission support for Rafale crews.

An AESA radar can steer beams electronically, interleave functions, and maintain multiple tracks with high reliability. For Rafale, RBE2 supports fighter interception, beyond-visual-range missile employment, terrain and maritime modes, mapping, and situational awareness. The radar's value is multiplied by the aircraft's sensor-fusion architecture and weapons such as MICA and Meteor. In practical terms, RBE2 is one of the systems that turns Rafale from an airframe into a modern multirole combat platform.

Service and export role

RBE2 AESA has been a major selling point for Rafale exports and upgrades.

RBE2's service history is tied directly to Rafale's operational and export success. Air forces buying Rafale evaluate not only the aircraft's performance but also its radar, electronic warfare, weapons integration, and upgrade path. The AESA radar gave Rafale a stronger position against peer fighters and provided growth potential through software and hardware improvements. For an equipment database, RBE2 deserves independent coverage because modern fighter capability depends heavily on sensors.
