Research Notes

Taiwanese T65 Rifle Family

medium

The T65 is a Taiwanese 5.56 mm assault rifle developed by the 205th Arsenal and related Taiwanese defense organizations as a domestic successor influenced by the AR-15/M16 system. It entered service in the Republic of China Armed Forces and became a foundation for later T86 and T91 rifle development. The T65 represents Taiwan's move toward indigenous infantry small-arms production.

5.56 mm Gas-Piston Rifle Based on AR Layout

medium

The T65 uses 5.56x45 mm ammunition and an AR-style layout but replaces the direct-gas system with a short-stroke gas piston. This reflects Taiwan's attempt to combine familiar Western ergonomics with potentially improved reliability in local conditions. The family evolved through several variants with changes to barrel, furniture, and handling characteristics.

Standard Rifle Lineage for Taiwan

medium

Operationally, the T65 gave Taiwan a local service rifle that could be produced and supported without total dependence on foreign suppliers. It is most important as the starting point for Taiwan's modern rifle lineage rather than as a current cutting-edge weapon. Later T86 and T91 rifles refined the same basic concept for changing infantry requirements.
