Research Notes

Taiwan's Modern Standard Rifle

medium

The T91 assault rifle is Taiwan's main evolution of the T65/T86 rifle family and became a standard 5.56 mm service rifle for the Republic of China Armed Forces. Developed by the 205th Arsenal, it incorporated lessons from the T86 while improving production maturity and operational suitability. It also gained attention in export and civilian-derived parts markets because of its piston upper design.

Short-Stroke Piston AR-Pattern Rifle

medium

The T91 keeps familiar AR-style layout and controls while using a short-stroke gas piston system. It fires 5.56x45 mm ammunition and is generally lighter and more compact than older T65 variants. The rifle supports optics, grenade launchers, and accessories depending on configuration. Its design priorities are practical reliability, maintainability, and compatibility with Taiwan's infantry doctrine rather than radical mechanical novelty.

Infantry Standard and Exportable Design

medium

Operationally, the T91 gives Taiwanese units a domestically produced rifle that can be sustained under political and supply-chain pressure. It is used across regular and reserve forces, with newer T112 plans indicating eventual replacement rather than immediate obsolescence. Its value is strategic as well as tactical: Taiwan retains a national small-arms production base that reduces dependence on external suppliers.
