T86
The T86 Combat Rifle, developed by the 205th Armory and approved in 1998, is a gas-operated, magazine-fed assault rifle designed to replace the T65 series. It features a short-stroke gas piston system, a polymer telescopic stock, and a 4-position selector switch, while incorporating design elements from the T65 and M16 rifles, and serves as the basis for the later T91 rifle.

Taiwanese Bridge Between T65 and T91

medium

The T86 assault rifle was developed by Taiwan's 205th Arsenal as the second major indigenous rifle design after the T65. It went through a long development period during the 1990s and entered limited service around 2000. Although production was modest, the T86 mattered because it became the technical bridge toward the more widely issued T91 rifle.

5.56 mm Piston Rifle

medium

The T86 uses 5.56x45 mm ammunition, AR-style ergonomics, a gas-operated rotating-bolt mechanism, and a short-stroke piston lineage that differs from the direct-gas M16 pattern. It improved handling and reliability over earlier Taiwanese rifles while keeping compatibility with STANAG-type magazines and familiar controls. Its limited production makes it less visible than the T91, but it established design choices reused later.

Limited Issue and Developmental Importance

medium

Operationally, the T86 served in limited numbers and is best understood as a developmental step rather than Taiwan's final standard rifle. It helped validate local manufacturing, ergonomics, and piston-system choices before volume production shifted to the T91. For HiWars, the T86 page should connect the rifle to Taiwan's broader indigenous small-arms continuity instead of treating it as an isolated design.
