Euronaval 2026 – Strike First: Diehl Defence and FLANQ surface the Q-Strike armed USV

One of the quieter revelations of this year’s Euronaval, held from 3 to 6 November at Paris Nord Villepinte, sits on the Diehl Defence stand: a mock-up of the Q-Strike, an uncrewed surface vessel (USV) born of a German industrial pairing that aims to put the Diehl effector portfolio to sea on an autonomous hull

The model on display – and it is a model, not a full-scale boat – is the first tangible expression of a strategic partnership sealed barely six weeks before the show. On 23 September 2026, Diehl Defence, the Überlingen-based missile and ammunition house, and FLANQ, the Rostock-headquartered maritime defence-tech firm, signed a memorandum of understanding for collaboration in the field of autonomous maritime systems. The agreement was signed in Überlingen by Daniel Esser, FLANQ’s Chief Operating Officer, and Dr Harald Buschek, Diehl Defence’s Chief Product Officer.

A strike boat for the German Navy – and its allies

According to the two companies, the partnership is intended to pool their expertise to extend maritime defence capabilities to unmanned platforms, opening up what the partners describe as the technology field of autonomous surface and underwater platforms as carriers for sensors and effectors. The declared goal is to establish themselves early as a reliable partner for the German Navy and its international partners, with a distinctly national approach designed, in the words of the announcement, to expand and strengthen German resilience

The name of the new USV is, for now, Q-Strike. Company material depicts the uncrewed surface vehicle operating with effectors from Diehl Defence, and the vessel is described by the partners as having been conceived specifically for strike missions. Full technical specifications have yet to be published; what is known is the industrial logic behind it. FLANQ brings the hull, the autonomy stack and the mission software – the fields of autonomy, sensor fusion and the development and integration of modular unmanned maritime platforms – while Diehl Defence contributes its established portfolio of effectors and decades of experience in the development and industrialisation of complex defence systems. The common goal, stated at the signing, is to realise an initial demonstrator within the current year, creating the basis for further development and procurement projects.

Complementary strengths

The pairing makes immediate industrial sense. FLANQ has made its name in maritime autonomy, developing and integrating modular uncrewed platforms designed to carry diverse sensor and effector payloads and to operate both solo and in coordinated “wolf pack” deployments. Diehl Defence, for its part, brings one of Europe’s deepest effector catalogues – a portfolio spanning guided missiles such as IRIS-T and naval ammunition developed with Leonardo, including the 127 mm Vulcano guided round selected for the German Navy’s F125 frigates.

Q-Strike’s modular design allows it to accommodate a wide range of customer requirements, including the integration of light weapons for engagements against air, surface and land targets. The choice of effectors can therefore be tailored to the mission and operational needs of each customer. The ambition is clear: a German-built strike boat, drawing on proven European building blocks, positioned to meet a demand that is no longer hypothetical.

Right show, right moment

The timing could hardly be better. The 30th edition of Euronaval unfolds under the theme “Towards high intensity”, with a record exhibition floor and naval drones dominating both the aisles and the agenda – France’s Minister of the Armed Forces, Catherine Vautrin, used the opening day to announce a new pact with industry to accelerate the fielding of naval drones. In a hall where every major player is showing some form of uncrewed surface combatant, the Q-Strike mock-up is Germany’s bid to be counted among them, and a reminder that, in the emerging order of naval warfare, the hull may be the easy part.
