Poland weighs new Patriot missile transfer to Ukraine

Poland is considering transferring another batch of Patriot missiles to Ukraine, with a decision expected within days, Polish Deputy Defense Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka said on RMF FM, European Pravda reported.

Sobkowiak-Czarnecka said any decision on transferring the weapons must be evaluated primarily through the lens of Poland’s own security. She said the recent incident involving a Russian missile that entered Polish territory has shaped that evaluation.

“Despite all the political fuss there was earlier about whether we were right to hand over the missiles, today he leans toward sending more, because he would rather see a missile like that shot down over Ukrainian territory than have it fly into ours,” said Sobkowiak-Czarnecka.

Asked when a decision might come, she said only that it was a matter of the coming days.

Poland confirmed in July that it had transferred PAC-3 missiles for Patriot systems to Ukraine several months earlier. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said at the time that the transfer involved five missiles.

The missile incident Sobkowiak-Czarnecka referenced took place July 30, when a Kh-101 cruise missile crashed in eastern Poland during a Russian overnight strike on Ukraine that killed at least eight civilians and wounded more than 50. Poland’s air force scrambled two F-16 fighters shortly after 2 a.m. that day, followed by two MiG-29s, with a Saab 340 airborne early warning aircraft and a NATO Airbus A330 refueling tanker supporting the response, according to reporting by HNGN.

Polish authorities said they tracked roughly 20 aerial targets during Russia’s overnight barrage, and one object came within about five kilometers of the Polish border before turning back east; the Kh-101 continued into Polish territory before crashing. Poland later confirmed the missile had been manufactured in 2026 and summoned Russia’s ambassador over the incident.

That incident followed a September 2025 incursion in which 19 to 23 Russian drones entered Polish airspace overnight, prompting Poland to invoke Article 4 of the NATO treaty and close airspace over several airports, including Warsaw’s two main international airports.
