The KJ-600 is China's first domestically developed carrier-based fixed-wing early warning aircraft, which made its public debut during the 80th anniversary parade commemorating the victory of the Chinese People's Anti-Japanese War and the World Anti-Fascist War. This aircraft can perform core tasks such as early warning detection, command guidance, target indication, and operational coordination, and is hailed as the sea and air command center of the carrier battle group. It significantly extends the early warning detection range of the carrier strike group, providing sufficient reaction time for the formation and greatly enhancing air defense interception efficiency. To adapt to the limited space of the carrier hangar and deck, the KJ-600 employs a wing folding design that is completely different from that of the J-35 and J-15T. What considerations lie behind this differentiated design?

Military commentator Wei Dongxu: The J-15, J-15T, and J-35 are all carrier-based fighter jets, and their wing sizes are not that long. After being folded upwards, they occupy relatively small space on the deck and in the hangar, allowing for more carrier-based fighter jets to be accommodated in the hangar.

The KJ-600 is a twin-engine small turboprop aircraft with relatively large wings, meaning it has a large wingspan. If it were to use an upward folding method, it could reduce the space occupied on the deck and in the hangar, but because the wings fold upwards and are relatively long, the height could become an issue. In the hangar, the wingtips might touch the ceiling, so it adopts a rearward folding method to ensure that its height does not exceed limits. Whether parked on the flight deck or in the hangar, there will be no collision, and it can minimize the space and area it occupies. Therefore, the wing folding methods of carrier-based fighter jets and carrier-based fixed-wing early warning aircraft will exhibit these different patterns.

Summary

The KJ-600 early warning aircraft features a unique wing folding design that differs from carrier-based fighter jets like the J-15 and J-35. This design accommodates the larger wingspan of the KJ-600, ensuring it fits within the limited space of aircraft carriers without risking collisions in hangars. The KJ-600 is recognized for its capabilities in early warning detection and command guidance.
