Research Notes

European replacement for Sidewinder stocks

IRIS-T is a European short-range air-to-air missile led by Diehl Defence.

IRIS-T was developed through a Germany-led European program to provide a modern short-range air-to-air missile for NATO fighter fleets. The project answered the need for high off-boresight engagement, imaging infrared guidance, and compatibility with aircraft such as Eurofighter, Gripen, F-16, Tornado, and F/A-18. Diehl Defence became the main contractor and continues to evolve the missile family.

Imaging infrared and thrust-vector agility

IRIS-T pairs an imaging infrared seeker with high-agility control.

The missile name reflects its core design: infrared imaging seeker, tail control, and thrust-vector control for very high agility. IRIS-T is built for close air combat where aircraft may need to engage targets far away from the nose line. Its seeker and maneuverability also made the missile attractive as the basis for surface-launched IRIS-T air-defense systems.

Air-to-air missile with ground-defense influence

IRIS-T links fighter armament with modern European ground-based air defense.

IRIS-T is used by several European air forces and has become strategically more visible because its technology family also supports IRIS-T SLS and SLM ground-based air defense. That dual relevance matters for equipment research: the missile is both a fighter weapon and part of Europe's broader short- and medium-range air-defense modernization.
