Research Notes

Maritime patrol aircraft based on the 737

The P-8A Poseidon is a U.S. Navy maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft derived from the Boeing 737 airliner. It replaced the P-3C Orion as the Navy's principal long-range platform for anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence collection, and maritime domain awareness.

ASW, ASuW, ISR, and networked patrol

The aircraft carries maritime sensors, sonobuoys, communications equipment, torpedoes, and anti-ship weapons while operating at jet speed over long ocean distances. Its value comes from combining onboard detection with networked cueing, allowing it to find submarines, monitor surface vessels, and coordinate with ships, satellites, and unmanned systems.

Core Indo-Pacific maritime sensor

P-8A operations are especially important in the Indo-Pacific, where distances are large and submarine activity is strategically significant. The aircraft is also widely adopted by allied navies, creating a shared maritime-patrol ecosystem for the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, Norway, India, and other operators.
